SAN JOSE, Antique – The last day of the campaign period for local polls was “generally peaceful,” according to Antique Provincial Police Office (APPO).
APPO deputy director for operations Lieutenant Colonel Norby Escobar said they have not received reports of election-related violence within Antique’s 18 municipalities.
“So far the last day of the campaign period is peaceful,” Escobar said on Saturday.
Escobar added there was no apprehension of gun ban violators in the police checkpoints they have set up.
He also appealed to the local candidates and their supporters to continuously observe safe and peaceful elections.
“If the candidates or their supporters have complaints, we encourage them to report to the police and not to put the law in their own hands,” he said.
He said police personnel were deployed to safeguard vote counting machines at the polling precincts during its final testing and sealing on May 10.
“We had police personnel already deployed last Friday,” he said.
He said these police personnel already started to render 24-hour duty at polling precincts.
The Philippine Army meanwhile sent 58 augmentation troops to enforce tight security measures during elections in the province. (With a report from PNA/PN)
