BACOLOD City – Christmas 2020 may be remembered as the simplest if not the loneliest of Christmases for most provincial government employees of Negros Occidental.

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said there will be no extra bonus this year.

Funds, according to Lacson, were realigned to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) response of the province.

“We spent a lot for COVID-19,” he pointed out.

Last year, capitol employees received an additional bonus of P60,000, aside from the 13th and 14th month benefits, respectively, which are usually being distributed in May and November every year.

This year’s planned capitol Christmas party at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City was also reportedly scraped due to the pandemic.

However, Lacson said he will allow various departments to hold their respective parties, provided they strictly observe the mandated health protocols, such as physical distancing, wearing of masks and face shields.

The governor also called on the provincial government workers not to feel sad, pointing out “Christmas is in our hearts” and promised that they will make it up next year.

“What is important is that we can celebrate Christmas with our family. I’m sure there will always be food on the table,” he added.

The Progressive Alliance of Capitol Employees (PACE) will file an appeal. Renelo Lastierre, president, said they have counterproposals because they believe Lacson will not allow a “black Christmas.”/PN
