BORACAY – Vendors and “commissioners” without permits are no longer allowed at the beaches of this island resort.
The Boracay Tourist Assistance Center’s “Oplan Hawan” covers the White Beach, as well as the Bulabog and Puka beaches.
First conducted in August last year, the operation originally aimed to demolish illegal structures along the 4-kilometer White Beach.
This time it is directed at vendors and commissioners, or people making arrangements with business establishments to bring in clients for a fee (commission).
Commissioners must have license to do business from the local government of Malay.
At least 200 vendors and commissioners without permits were identified during the pre-operation phase, said Senior Inspector Jose Mark Anthony Gesulga, deputy police chief and in charge of Oplan Hawan.
First offenders will be warned. A second offense will result in imprisonment, Gesulga said.
Regulating vendors and commissioners will help eliminate harassment complaints, the police officer said.
“Some commissioners overcharge the tourists, while illegal ambulant vendors annoy visitors,” said Gesulga.
Helping in Oplan Hawan are the Philippine Army-Boracay Task Group, Malay auxiliary police, Boracay Action Group, among other agencies. (With reports from Philippine News Agency/PN)
