ILOILO City – Unless there’s an emergency or a need for a shutdown, there won’t be any power interruption this Holy Week, according to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).
“We do not have scheduled maintenance activities for the week,” stressed Michelle Visera, NGCP corporate communications officer.
Nevertheless, Visera said, NGCP personnel have been put on alert and deployed to strategic locations to respond to emergencies.
NGCP’s maintenance activities will be carried out after Holy Week.
NGCP also appealed to the public, especially to children, to avoid flying kites near transmission lines.
“Kites may get entangled with power lines. This could result to power interruptions,” said Visera.
Worse, kite flyers could get electrocuted.
“We would like to clarify that we are not prohibiting people from flying kites. But they should do it far away from power lines,” she said.
Visera urged the public to conserve electricity this dry season and they can start in households.
“In our own little way we can help conserve energy. When you are ironing clothes, for example, please do it by bulk. Also, switch-off the air-conditioner when the weather is cool,” said Visera.
NGCP is in charge of the operation, maintenance and improvement of national transmission facilities and system. It controls the supply and demand of power by determining the power mix through the selection of power plants to put online (i.e. to signal power plants to produce power, as power plants will only produce power or feed their power to the transmission grid when directed by NGCP).
As a common carrier, it must provide non-discriminatory access to its transmission system. It is subject to the standards set by the Philippine Grid Code and the Transmission Development Plan.
It also updates the daily power situation outlook for Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao by determining the available capacity, system peak, and gross reserve (all of which are in units of MW or megawatts)./PN
