BORACAY – The police here was urged to strictly monitor bars and restaurants and ensure that minimum health protocols are followed such as physical distancing.

Malay, Aklan’s Sangguniang Bayan member Ralf Tolosa said he was made aware that people inside some bars and restaurants were not practicing social distancing.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) recently denounced a Halloween party in Barangay Manoc-Manoc for violating health and safety guidelines.

The organizers were penalized with P5,000 fine for the “irresponsible” mass gathering while criminal complaints were filed against the foreigners who wore police uniforms during the party.

Tolosa said more police officers should be out patrolling and watching restaurants and bars to make sure social distancing, wearing of facemasks and face shields were being followed.

“We have to take the situation seriously to control the spread of the coronavirus. We have to intensify efforts to enforce the public health guidelines over the course of the pandemic,” he added.

Boracay Island has been imposing curfew – from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. – to attract tourists from low-risk areas and reinvigorate the tourism industry in the island.

In addition, Malay acting town mayor Frolibar Bautista also encouraged residents to call law enforcers on businesses and individuals not complying the prescribed restrictions set out by the local government.

On Nov. 29, at least 33 individuals were apprehended for not wearing facemasks and face shields in public places.

“A P2,500  penalty is slapped against violators. Ang hindi makabayad may limang araw na community service. Bago umalis ng bahay, dapat i-remind natin ang ating kasambahay na mag-suot ng facemasks,” Bautista said./PN
