MANILA – Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo ended their campaign on a winning note following a 2-1 stunner over 2020 Philippines Football League (PFL) champions United City Football Club at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite on Monday night.
Kenshiro Daniels and Carlyle Mitchell converted a goal each as the Iloilo City-based football club sealed the second spot in the standings with 11 points on three wins and two draws to clinch a seat in the qualifying phase of 2021 Asian Football Confederation Champions League.
Despite the defeat, four-time PFL champions United City FC, formerly Ceres-Negros Football Club, remained on top of the standings with 12 points with four victories and one lost.
Kaya-Iloilo went to work early as they surged to a 1-0 edge at the 15th minute after Daniels drilled a fine cross by Eric Giganto. Mitchell then delivered the second goal for Kaya-Iloilo as he skied above everyone in the corner at the 38th minute.
The Ilonggos attempted to widen the lead further in the second half but Daniels and Dylan Debruycker missed their tries. Manny Ott got one back for United City FC at the 83rd minute from a pass by Bienvenido Marañon to cut the deficit to 1-2.
Following Ott’s hit, United City FC attempted to force a deadlock several times with attempts from Marañon, Stephan Schrock and Robert Lopez Mendy were turned back by Kaya-Iloilo keeper Louie Casas.
Meanwhile, Mendiola Football Club 1991 also entered the winning column following a 2-0 blanking of Maharlika Manila Football Club. Aaron Altiche and Jim Flores were the goal scorers for Mendiola 1991 with four points./PN
