SAN JOSE, Antique – The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) launched a new campaign to say no to plastic straws in a bid to protect the environment.

Andres Untal, PENRO officer, said the campaign seeks to raise public awareness on the danger of plastic straws to the environment.

“We connect this campaign to the observance of the Month of the Ocean with the theme “Free the Sea From Marine Debris,” and the International Biodiversity Day,” said Untal.

He noted the smaller plastic pieces like straws are being ingested by fish and other marine creatures.

“Eventually these marine animals will die for ingesting plastic particles,” Untal stressed.

According to the PENRO officer, time will come that seas will be swarmed with plastics more than fish based on a study.

Untal is hoping the local government units will pass an ordinance in support to the no to plastic straw campaign and other single use plastics. (PIAAntique/PN)
