BACOLOD City – Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias and STI-West Negros University figured in a “basketbrawl” in the semifinals of the NOPSSCEA secondary boys basketball on Saturday at the STI-WNU Gym here.
CSAV were way ahead of defending champions STI-WNU at 81-62 with just over a minute left in the match when the game was halted after two players got entangled in positioning.
That incident started the free-for-all as players, coaching staff, parents and supporters of both CSAV and STI-WNU entered the court and traded punches.
As of press time, NOPSSCEA was yet to release its verdict whether what punishment it would slap on players and members of the coaching staff who got involved in the bench-clearing.
It is still not clear whether CSAV, declared the winner in the abbreviated match, would be allowed to compete in the gold medal match being played as of press time yesterday.
Meanwhile, Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts claimed the other championship seat in the tournament. It defeated the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, 82-67.
The champion squad is set to play in Provincial Meet next month./PN
Its on the coaches and staff to control their players. Maybe that particular brawl was an effect and imitation of what the players had seen during the FIBA qualifiers last year between Gilas and Australia. Its not good always every time their’s a brawl in basketball. Its an indication of unsportsman like attitude.
