ILOILO City – The Philippines has not enough sugar to export, according to the former governor of Negros Occidental, Rafael Coscolluela.

At the Great Britain Festival hosted by Iloilo City on March 24, Coscolluela said the country must improve its sugar production so could supply the British market.

Philippines does export sugar but its priority is the United States. Its yearly quota is about 138,000 metric tons, said Coscolluela.

“If we have surplus in our domestic requirements, we can allocate this to the greater world market,” he said. “But right now we actually have very little sugar available to ship out.”

With its vast sugarcane haciendas, Negros Occidental is a top producer of sugar in the country.

Coscolluela said the British market is a good one to explore. He also noted the “goodwill that we have with Great Britain.”

One thing that bothers local sugar planters, however, is the low price of sugar in the world market, said Coscolluela.

“If we export to Great Britain, we will have to export at prevailing world market prices,” he said. “But who knows? In the future we may eventually come to terms with competing against other sugar producers even at lower world market prices.”/PN
