MANILA – Ratifying the Paris Agreement will boost the Philippines’ climate initiatives, according to Sen. Loren Legarda.
But failure to do so would leave the country “in isolation” and more vulnerable to disasters, the chair of the Senate committee on climate change said.
Legarda is pushing for a Senate concurrence of the climate deal after President Rodrigo Duterte vowed to ratify the historic pact.
“If we fully accept the Agreement, we can influence the decisions on how the accord will be implemented, and we maintain our leadership role in the international climate talks and advocacy,” she said.
In a recent speech at Malacañang Duterte agreed to sign the agreement he previously described as “stupid” and “absurd.”
Sanctions must be imposed on industrialized countries that fail to honor their financial commitments, the President said.
Under the agreement, developed countries must raise $100 billion a year to help other countries suffering the impact of climate change.
Again Legarda clarified the Paris Agreement contains no provision hampering the Philippines’ industrialization and other development efforts.
“The Philippines’ ratification of the Agreement will send a strong signal of our continuing commitment to work with the rest of the world in ensuring the survival of this generation and the generations to come, and the ability of the Earth to sustain life,” she said.
Since its entry into force on Nov. 4, 100 of the 197 Parties to the Convention have ratified the agreement./PN
