ILOILO City – This city has nine active cases of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) left but the City Health Office (CHO) will not recommend lifting the state of calamity just yet.
According to CHO officer-in-charge Dr. Annabelle Tang, the number of cases is fluctuating, thus “wala pa assurance nga ma-stop.”
As of Oct. 23, data of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) showed seven barangays with active cases of AGE.
The city so far recorded 932 confirmed AGE cases, of which 909 already recovered while 14 died.
Aside from AGE, the city has 33 confirmed cases of cholera, all of whom already recovered.
“Saka-panaog pa siya, indi pa siya amo na ka stable,” Tang said.
The CHO-OIC added that the city has not realized yet its plan to establish a safe water system in affected communities.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said the city government is taking steps to provide short and long-term solutions.
He called for a meeting with the city’s major water distributor – Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW) – to fast-track its water pipe laying.Treñas also plans building sanitary communal toilets in barangays.
The city government is also considering erecting overhead water tankers that will be supplied with safe drinking water by MPIW./PN
