KALIBO, Aklan – There is a decrease in the number of hotel clients in this capital town, according to the Kalibo Ati-Atihan Accommodation Association.

Association president Gerwin Garcia attributes the decrease to the expansion made in the Caticlan Airport in Malay, Aklan, where the world-famous Boracay Island is located.

For several years, the Kalibo International Airport (KIA) has been the major gateway of tourists taking flights to go to Boracay.

The expansion project in KIA is ongoing and may be finished three years from now.

Tourists are opting to book direct flights to Malay than in Kalibo as a result.

“We observed 70-percent decrease in the number of clients this year compared to the previous years,” Garcia said.

Caticlan Airport – with expansion project finished – operated in the last quarter of 2016.

Garcia added that some hotels have cut the number of their employees due to the decrease.

“We have been discussing with the Aklan provincial government and the municipal government of Kalibo. We are proposing to make Kalibo as an independent tourism destination from Boracay,” Garcia said./PN
