BORACAY – Seven candidates are running for village chiefs in three barangays in this island resort – Balabag, Manoc-Manoc and Yapak.

Three of the candidates, once elected, are expected to help sustain the ongoing island rehabilitation.

In Balabag, former village chief Glenn Sacapano is running against incumbent village councilman Jason Talapian.

Sacapano wants to succeed the post of his wife – incumbent Balabag village chief Lilibeth Sacapano.

In Manoc-Manoc, village councilman Nixon Sualog is running against Joel Gelito.

Gelito was a village chief of Manoc-Manoc for 10 years.

β€œIt is up to the botantes kung sino ang iboboto nila – ang apo or ang lolo,” said Gelito – who serves Manoc-Manoc as councilman for the fifth consecutive year – during an election open forum on May 5.

The forum was organized by the Boracay Foundation, Inc. and the Kapihan sa Boracay.

In Yapak, three village chief candidates are running against each other: village councilwoman Marlyn Villaresis, incumbent village chief Hector Casidsid and former village chief Anselmo Casidsid.

β€œHangad ko ang pagbabago ng Yapak. Sa tatlong barangay sa isla, kami ang nahuhuli sa developments kahit dito sa aming barangay ang malalaking negosyo at hotels,” said Villaresis during the forum.

Villaresis was the only Yapak village chief candidate who attended the forum.

Boracay is home to 56,444 residents, or 71 percent of the total population of Malay, Aklan. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
