CAPIZ – A 10-wheeler truck loaded with construction materials killed a street sweeper and hurt 15 other individuals after it collided with around 27 vehicles in Barangay Poblacion Norte, Ivisan town around 7:36 a.m. yesterday, August 13.
Maricel Sargento succumbed to fatal body injuries while receiving treatment at the Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital.
Major Ruby Magallanes, chief of the Ivisan Municipal Police Station (MPS), said Sargento was ran over by the truck.
Magallanes said the truck driven by Ryan Bengan Molato, 39, and resident of Purok 8, Barangay Tarong, Carles, Iloilo, and with his four companions, was from Balasan, Iloilo and was heading to Kalibo, Aklan when the accident happened.
Molato lost control of the vehicle after its brakes malfunctioned and plowed into vehicles running in the opposite direction, said Magallanes.
The police chief added that the truck overtook the motorcycle driven by Sargento’s husband, causing the victim to fall off and she was ran over by the truck.
Fourteen injured victims were also brought to Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital while two others were rushed to St. Anthony Hospital for proper medical treatment.
Molato was detained at the Ivisan MPS as of this writing.
Magallanes said he is facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries, reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, and reckless imprudence resulting in multiple damage of properties./PN
