TWENTY-three Guimarasnon basketball players are set to showcase their dunking ability during the Guimaras Players’ Center Sports Academy’s (GPCSA) Zoom Dunk Competition on May 1, Saturday.
GPCSA’s founder and West Visayas State University sports director Dr. Richard Gabayoyo told the Buzzer Beater that he expects the competition, which will be streamed at GPCSA’s Facebook page at 1:30 p.m., to be an intense one.
“I am certain that they will give their all. It has been a long time since they have played basketball due to the pandemic,” Gabayoyo said. “I believe this will be the first Zoom dunk competition organized in our country so this is going to be an exciting event.”
Among the listed participants for the competition were Buenavista’s Carl Bryan Damaso, Carl Jun Damaso, Jeremy Aguilar, Mieko Chavez, Joshua Miguel, Leonico Camarista, Joered Sorongon, Michael Igpuara, Jay David Gallo, Lloyd Lanado, Mark Gison, and Rhensoy Laureno.
Competing also in the online dunk were Rich Smith Jauro, June Michael Adorador, Wennie Parnecio, Shaqkiell Guarnes IV, John Carlo Bangha-on, John Carlos Temblador and Fritz Alba, all from Jordan.
Others who will participate are Kalil Arn Ablao and Robinson Terre of Nueva Valencia, Francis Pugao of San Lorenzo, and Rico Jhan Tambalo of Sibunag.
According to Gabayoyo, each competitor must wear basketball attire with shoes and socks, they must also execute their dunk within a minute and a half, and they must also be on a facemask before and after the dunk.
Gabayoyo further said that participants may use a backyard court, sitio court or barangay court as long as the height of the basketball ring shall be nine feet minimum from the ground/floor to the ring.
To make their dunk executions lively, participants can use props while they are encouraged to have a stable Wi-Fi connection or mobile data for the judges to see their dunks.
To ensure fair, transparent, and reliable scoring, Gabayoyo said they have invited respected and highly competent judges from other provinces in Panay Island. A 10-point scoring system will be used in this competition./PN
