ILOILO City – From an initial 50 centavos, jeepney drivers now seek a P1 increase in the minimum fare.

They made known the new proposal during yesterday’s public hearing at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region 6 office in Barangay Tabuc Suba, Jaro district.

Jeepney drivers cited the recent 50-centavo oil price hike in seeking the P1 fare increase.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also made an initial analysis that a 50-centavo increase in the minimum jeepney fare won’t make a dent on the drivers’ meager daily income, said Atty. Jose Marie Lamparero, regional spokesperson of LTFRB.

It was the Iloilo City Loop Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association (ICLAJODA) that petitioned for a 50-centavo fare increase late last year.

The Pinag-isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators and Nationwide – Panay chapter has also changed its mind and now also favors a P1 jeepney fare hike. It was previously against it and said a 50-centavo increase in the minimum jeepney fare would be sufficient.

Currently, the minimum jeepney fare in Western Visayas is P6.50 for regular passengers and P5 for students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The National Economic and Development Authority’s (NEDA) initial analysis, however, indicated no strong justification to warrant an increase in jeepney fare at this time. Still, it acknowledged the increasing trend in the prices of oil in the world market.

Last month, the LTFRB central office approved a P1 increase on minimum fares for all jeepneys operating in Metro Manila and in Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog.

Lamparero said the position papers of those present in yesterday’s public hearing will be forwarded to the LTFRB central office./PN
