ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) approved an ordinance institutionalizing the yearly “Search for Huwarang Ilongga sang Probinsya.”

The contest has several categories. These are:

* Huwarang Nanay (from the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program)

* Huwarang Ilongga sa Kabuhayan

* Huwarang Ilongga sa Sining at Kultura

* Huwarang Ilongga in Public Service

* Huwarang Ilongga sa Lokal na Pamahalaan (Barangay Level)

* Huwarang Ilongga sa Medisina at Kalusugan

* Huwarang Ilongga sa Agrikultura

* Huwarang Ilongga sa Agham at Teknolohiya at Pangkapaligiran

* Huwarang Ilongga sa Edukasyon

Ordinance No. 2018-167 mandates the creation of a search and evaluation committee that will receive nominations and do the vetting.

The committee may introduce more categories in the annual search as it sees fit.

The ordinance sets the minimum qualifications for a nominee. These are the following:

* must be a Filipino citizen, an Ilongga and resident of Iloilo city or province for at least three years

* of good moral character

* with meritorious distinctions

* has introduced or did programs, projects or services that promote the development of her community

The evaluation criteria include the achievements of the nominee, leadership and the social impact of her programs, projects or services.

Each awardee will receive a P20,000 cash prize and plaque of recognition.

The awarding is every March, Women’s Month.

The search and evaluation committee will be made up of the following:

* chief of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) as chairperson

* chairperson of the SP Committee on Women and Family Affairs as vice chairperson

* PSWDO focal person for the welfare and development of women

* chairperson of the SP Committee on Social Welfare, Housing, Senior Citizens, and Persons with Disability

* representative from a nongovernment organization related to the welfare and development of women duly recognized by the provincial government

* representative from the Provincial Legal Office

* representative from the Iloilo Police Provincial Office’s women’s desk

* representative from the Provincial Gender and Development Council

Ordinance No. 2018-167 was sponsored by Vice Gov. Christine Garin. She said it aims to do or achieve the following:

* advocate women’s rights and the importance of women empowerment in development

* encourage women to maximize their potential and contribute to the development of families, communities and the entire nation

* motivate women to influence fellow women and other sectors and gender group to end violence against women

* recognize the contribution, innovation and involvement of women in the development of Iloilo in various fields/PN
