ILOILO City – There are a combined 114,385 candidates in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in Western Visayas, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Various election offices in the region received the certificates of candidacy (COCs) of these aspirants from April 14 to 21.
The elections are on May 14.
A total of 73,222 people are running for barangay council positions (8,760 for barangay captain and 64,462 for councilman).
In the SK election, Comelec data showed 41,163 candidates (8,420 for SK chairman and 32,743 for councilor).
According to Comelec regional director Dennis Ausan, the period for the filing of COCs was generally peaceful.
By province, the number of COC filers was as follows:
* Iloilo – 32,567 (barangay); 16,383 (SK)
* Negros Occidental – 14,672 (barangay); 8,876 (SK)
* Antique – 10,177 (barangay); 4,756 (SK)
* Capiz – 8,127 (barangay); 5,948 (SK)
* Aklan – 5,861 (barangay); 4,048 (SK)
* Guimaras – 1,818 (barangay); 1,152 (SK)
The last barangay election was held in October 2013 while the last SK election was held in October of 2010.
Based on Comelec Resolution No. 10-26, the election period begins on April 14 and will end on May 21.
A gun ban also takes effect during this period.
The campaign period is from May 4 to May 12.
Campaigning is prohibited on May 13, the day before the election./PN
