BACOLOD City – Tens of thousands of alleged illegal drug users and/or peddlers in Negros Island Region have surrendered to the police.

Amid the intensified antidrug campaign, 32,806 turned themselves in from July 1 to Dec. 31 in 2016, according to the Police Regional Office 18 (PRO-18).

Among them were 6,802 who were in the PRO-18’s watch lists of drug personalities, Superintendent Romeo Mangwag, Regional Operations and Plans Division chief, told a news conference yesterday.

The remaining 26,004 surrenderees were not in the police’s watch lists but voluntarily turned themselves in, said Mangwag.

A total of 544 suspects were subject to 351 successful antidrug operations from Aug. 25 to Dec. 31 in 2016. Four of the suspects died after fighting the police, the PRO-18 said.

A total of P22,543,741.90 worth of illegal drugs were confiscated during the said operations, said the regional police.

Chief Superintendent Renato Gumban, regional police director, said he aims to eliminate drugs in the region before he retires this year. “It’s possible. We can do it,” he stressed./PN
