Over 50,000 sugar workers get cash aid

ROXAS City – A total of 51,653 sugar workers in Iloilo and Capiz provinces have received cash bonus from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The sugar workers were members of the 21 planters’ association which were chosen as beneficiaries of DOLE’s P17.5 million cash bonus fund.

The cash bonus is a productivity-based bonus based on the number of days a worker rendered services in the sugar mill or sugar farm.

It is given directly to all mill and plantation employees/workers except managerial employees.

Joselito Dela Banda, head of DOLE-Iloilo, said the distribution of the cash bonus is aimed at augmenting the sugar workers’ income.

He added that the cash bonus will help sustain the basic needs of the sugar workers’ families.

The fund was collected from three sugar mills in Panay, such as the Central Azucarera de San Antonio and Universal Robina Corp. – both located in Passi City, Iloilo – and the Capiz Sugar Central in Capiz.

The distribution of the cash bonus is in line with Republic Act 6982, or the Sugar Amelioration Act of 1991. (With a report from DOLE Region 6/PN)
