Over P3.4 million in Dinagyang prizes

ILOILO City – The Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) has allotted P3,409,750 in prizes for various Dinagyang Festival competitions this month.

For the ati-ati tribes contest on Jan. 28, 10 are gunning for the grand prize of P250,000 and four runners-up prizes.

The competing tribes are the following:

* Salognon – Jaro National High School

* Paghidaet – La Paz National High School

* Obreros – Bo. Obrero National High School

* Ilonganon- Jalandoni National High School

* Dagatnon – Ramon Avanceña National High School

* Panayanon- Iloilo City National High School

* Buntatalanit- Tiu Cho Teg Ana Ros Foundation Integrated School

* Pan-ay – Fort San Pedro National High School

* Amihan – Mandurriao National High School

* Tapasnon – from Tapaz, Capiz

The first runner-up will receive P175,000; second runner-up, P200,000; third runner-up, P150,000; and fourth runner-up, P125,000.

The total cash prize allotted for the ati-ati tribes competition reached P1,360,000.

There will also be consolation and minor prizes.

Dinagyang is known for its participants’ impressive choreography and striking costumes that reflect the ingenuity, craftsmanship and artistry of the Ilonggos.

This year, the tribes will perform (between three to five minutes) in five judging areas: Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo provincial capitol, Delgado-Mabini streets, Quezon-Ledesma streets, and Maria Clara area.

In the Kasadyahan regional festival contest on Jan. 27, 10 groups will be vying for the championship prize of P200,000 and four runners-up prizes.

The competing groups/festivals are the following:

* Pintaflores of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental

* Tinabuay of Murcia, Negros Occidental

* Banigan of Libertad, Antique

* Binagtong sang Manggahan of Nueva Valencia, Guimaras

* Mangunguma (Manggahan Festival), San Lorenzo, Guimaras

* Manughabol kang Salakayan of Miag-ao, Iloilo

* Pantat of Zarraga, Iloilo

*Tultugan of Maasin, Iloilo

* Haw-as of Dumangas, Iloilo

* Binagtong

The first runner-up will receive P175,000; second runner-up, P150,000; third runner-up, P125,000; and fourth runner-up, P100,000.

There will also be consolation and minor prizes.

The total prize allotted for the Kasadyahan reached P990,000.

Dinagyang is the Hiligaynon word for revelry or merrymaking. The festival started in 1967 when a replica of the image of Sto. Niño (Child Jesus) de Cebu was brought to the San Jose Parish Church.
The image, accompanied by devotees from Cebu, was enthusiastically received by the Ilonggos who danced on the streets of the city to the tune of rumbling drums.

Prizes for other Dinagyang competitions this year are as follows:

* Tambor, Trumpa, Musika (drum and bugle contest) – P190,000

* photo contest – P140,000

* painting contest – P40,000

* Ilonggo Arts Festival (hip-hop, folkdance, dance sports and other categories) – P181,750

* Parade of Lights (float contest) – P500,000/PN
