OVP distributes rice, hygiene kits to Kanlaon evacuees

BACOLOD City – Vice President Sara Duterte visited three local government units (LGUs) affected by the Mount Kanlaon eruption in Negros Island, yesterday, April 23.

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) distributed 25 kilos of rice to each of the 2,540 internally displaced families who are currently staying in the evacuation centers in La Carlota City and La Castellana town in Negros Occidental, and Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

In a press conference at La Castellana National High School (LCNHS), one of the evacuation sites, Vice President Duterte said she wanted to personally see the situation of the affected families and bring assistance.

The Vice President, who got the chance to talk with the evacuees, also directed her staff from her Bacolod satellite office to provide them with hygiene kits.

Moreover, she assured La Castellana’s Mayor Rhummyla Mangilimutan that she will support the Kitchen Project, a daily cooking project of the local government, by providing rice.

Earlier this month, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said it has provided P131.515 million in various assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Negros Island since the explosive eruption of Mount Kanlaon last Dec. 9.

Data of the DSWD Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center showed that Negros Occidental has received P83.134 million in total assistance.

The recipient-LGUs include La Castellana with P52.774 million; La Carlota City, P22.358 million; Bago City, P4.847 million; Murcia, P1.482 million; Pontevedra, P1.216 million; and San Carlos City, P456,530.

Canlaon City, the lone affected LGU in Negros Oriental, received a total of P48.38 million./PN
