BACOLOD City – Suspected shabu worth an estimated P10 million was seized in a police operation in Barangay 1.

Police Station 2 operatives caught two suspected drug dealers — Julie Villanueva, 47, of the same village and John Martir De Ocampo, 27, of Barangay Bata.

They missed their target — Julie’s husband Reynante — and two other suspects.

Officers led by Chief Inspector Benedicto Villarias staged a buy-bust operation around 10 p.m. Tuesday in Villanueva’s house in Purok Bangrus.

Julie who sold a plastic pack of suspected shabu to an undercover officer for P1,000.

Reynante and De Ocampo were seen repacking the same substance in a room, Villarias said.

Officers then swooped down on the house and seized about 1 kilo of suspected shabu, P2,500 cash, a pair of scissors, and a lighter.

Police said the confiscated substance had an estimated worth of P10 million.

Reynante and two other unidentified cohorts managed to escape.

Stocks of shabu circulating in the city came from barangays 1 and Banago, acting city police director Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky said, citing intelligence information.

“It was expected that big hauls (like this) would come from these barangays,” said Wanky.

He was glad their “no-letup operations against dangerous drugs” has borne fruit.

“We stumbled upon this big catch because of the cooperation of the people, especially in drug-affected barangays,” Wanky said.

The seizure came as Mayor Evelio Leonardia puts pressure on the Bacolod City Police Office — particularly Wanky — to perform better in the antidrug campaign.

Leonardia was not keen on making Wanky a full-fledged director until he sees a significant improvement in their operations against drug trafficking.

“[Wanky’s] accomplishments [are] not bad. I just want more performance,” the mayor previously said.

President Rodrigo Duterte tagged Negros as “No. 3” in the Philippines in terms of drug affectation, and Bacolod is the biggest local government unit in the region in terms of population, he said.

“That is why I want Wanky to seriously, effectively and efficiently improve the situation,” said the mayor.

Any improvement in the BCPO’s antidrug drive will guide him in deciding whether or not to keep Wanky as full-fledged director, Leonardia said./PN
