P135-M global tech institute to rise in NegOcc

BACOLOD City – The provincial government of Negros Occidental will build an institute to train competent workforce meeting the demands of the global market in various industries.

The P135-million Negros First Global Institute of Technology (NFGIT) will soon rise on a 2.5-hectare Capitol-owned property in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. on Monday led the groundbreaking ceremony for the building to be completed in two-and-a-half years.

The NFGIT is an offshoot of the now 10-year-old Negros Occidental Language and Information Technology Center (NFGIT) located at the Paglaum Sports Complex in this capital city.

Ma. Cristina Orbecido, NOLITC school vocational administrator, said the center needs to expand its programs to cater the demand for qualified workforce not only in the Philippines, but also abroad.

“It’s a global campus. The students will be trained to match the requirements or quality standards of our international partners, which have niche demand for workers,” Orbecido said.

The NOLITC has industry partners in Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, and New Zealand who need workers trained in internationally-recognized courses or qualifications.

The proposed structure will house offices, conference room, server room, and storage room in the first floor. Nine classrooms, faculty room, student affairs and guidance office, and research and external affairs office will also be put up on the second floor.

“Based on the evaluation of our partners, the Philippine standards do not meet the required international qualifications. That’s why, our workforce still needs to study further,” Orbecido noted. (With a report from PNA/PN)
