THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) yesterday said it seized P19.22 billion worth of smuggled goods in the first quarter of this year.

Among the top seized items in the first quarter this year were counterfeit goods worth more than P13.249 billion, agricultural products worth over P2.552 billion, cigarettes and tobacco products worth over P1.748 billion, and illegal drugs worth P849 million.

The agency said seized items were general merchandise, steel products, electronics, medical supplies, jewelry, food, chemicals, currency, fuel, and oil.

It also said that it revoked the accreditation of at least 48 importers and 19 customs brokers for violating Customs laws, rules, and regulations.

The BOC said it worked with other government agencies and international organizations to improve border security and combat smuggling syndicates.

Customs commissioner Bien Rubio said the agency will continue to work with the government agencies and private sectors to tighten the countryโ€™s borders.

โ€œWe will not tolerate any illegal activities that threaten our nation’s welfare and security,” Rubio said.

“We will remain vigilant in our efforts to combat smuggling and protect our nation’s interests,” he added. (GMA Integrated News)
