BACOLOD City – Bank checks valued at P3.8 million and cash reaching P2.6 million were carted away by burglars from a town official’s house in Purok Jardine, Doña Juliana Las Palmas, Barangay Taculing here.

Police said the victim was 60-year-old Neneth Escarda, treasurer for the municipal government of Isabela.

It is believed that the money belonged to the municipal government, which is now conducting an audit, said Police Captain Ar-jay Dangarang.

Meanwhile, Mayor Irene Montilla spoke to Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz and had a new municipal treasurer from the provincial government replace Escarda while an investigation is ongoing.

The investigation is being conducted by the Provincial Legal Office; the provincial government has the jurisdiction to appoint a municipal treasurer.

The victim told the police that when she woke up on Saturday, Jan. 21, she found their belongings ransacked and their jalousie windows detached./PN
