ILOILO City – A total of 359,518 indigent senior citizens in Western Visayas and Negros Occidental received their social pension for the first quarter of 2017.
The pension reached P539,277,000 covering the months of January, February and March, said Judith Tanate-Barredo, older person focal person of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6.
The budget was released through local government units and direct pay-out to beneficiaries.
Barredo said direct pay-outs were conducted simultaneously in areas like Iloilo City, Tapaz town in Capiz province, and Banga in Aklan.
DSWD set aside P2,157,108,000 for the implementation of the program in Western Visayas and Negros Occidental for 2017.
The Social Pension Program for Indigent Senior Citizens is an additional government assistance of P500 monthly to poor senior citizens to augment their daily subsistence and other medical needs.
Qualified beneficiaries are those 60 years old and above, frail sickly and with disability, without pension from SSS, GSIS or from any sources of pension in government and private agencies, and without permanent source of income, compensation of financial assistance from relatives to support basic needs.
