ILOILO City – The 58.84-million Himoga-an flood control project along Bacolod North Road in Brgy. Fabrica in Sagay City, Negros Occidental is nearing completion, according to District Engineer Jaime SJ Javellana of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Negros Occidental 1st District Engineering Office.
Said flood control project involves construction of 450 meters grouted riprap pn steel sheet piles with reinforced concrete along Himogaan River, including clearing and grubbing, excavation, and embankment.
Javellana said 82 percent of the project was completed as of January this year, and is set to be completed in June 2020, in time for rainy season.
“Hopefully, given favorable weather condition, we can complete the project in May this year, earlier than its scheduled completion,” said Javellana.
“This six-meter high slope protection aims to prevent river overflow and flooding by improving the river channel, mitigating the damage which may be caused by flood and soil erosion that may destroy houses, agricultural communities and properties,” he added.
Approximately 200 families living near the river can benefit from the said project, protecting their lives and source of living.
Meantime, Javellana said that DPWH is continuously working to provide relevant infrastructure projects that would safeguard the people from the damages brought about by flooding which usually starts at the middle of the year./PN
