MANILA – “You want imported cars? Pay import duties first.”
This was President Rodrigo Duterte’s message to car enthusiasts yesterday as he led the condemnation of 20 secondhand smuggled luxury cars at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) here.
BOC decided to destroy the smuggled luxury cars instead of putting them up for auction, said Commissioner Isidro Lapeña.
Duterte witnessed the condemnation. A heavy equipment (road roller) was used to crush the cars.
A total of 20 luxury cars were destroyed. BOC said these had a total value of P61.6 million.
The luxury vehicles included Lexus, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Jaguar, and Corvette Stingray.
As the condemnation at the Port of Manila was ongoing, the same was happening in the ports of Cebu and Davao.
According to the President, in destroying these smuggled luxury vehicles, the government was sending strong message to rich car enthusiasts who do not pay the correct import duties./PN
