MANILA – Sen. Manny Pacquiao, chairman of the Commission on Appointment’s (CA) committee on environment and natural resources, is backing the confirmation of Gina Lopez as Environment secretary.
“I am hoping na ma-approve naman (ang kanyang confirmation) para maalagaan ang environment natin,” said Pacquiao after Lopez’s confirmation hearing on Tuesday.
The CA is expected to decide on whether to confirm or reject her today, Wednesday.
The senator said he hopes the powerful body will confirm Lopez because of her staunch advocacy for the environment.
“Basta kami ni Sec. Lopez magkasama kami mula noon pa. Partner kami. Suportado ko siya mula noon. Magka-partner kami para pangalagaan ang kalikasan,” the boxer-turned-politician told reporters.
Pacquiao reiterated that Lopez’s confirmation as chief of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is “50-50.”
“Mahirap mapulsuhan kasi siempre mahirap din makuha ‘yung mga comment ng mga members. So, [ngayon] hintayin natin ang desisyon kung maco-confirm o hindi,” he added.
Lopez on Tuesday again faced the CA to answer criticisms levelled against her, specifically on her anti-mining stance.
The secretary was likewise quizzed on the legal bases for her shutting down and suspension of dozens of mining firms./PN
