MANILA ā€“ Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao announced he is set to fight World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse of Argentina on June 24 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In an article posted at Philboxing.com, Pacquiao said he chose Matthysse over American Danny Garcia because he likes the Argentineā€™s fighting style.

ā€œI like his aggressive fighting style. Thatā€™s what I want ā€“ to entertain the boxing fans. Besides, Matthysse is not a dirty fighter and I highly respect him for that,ā€ said Pacquiao.

The Pacman said he is the underdog in this fight.

ā€œBut Iā€™m used to it. It serves as a big motivation for me to train and fight hard to win the world crown,ā€ added the eight-division world boxing champion.

Pacquiao also said his team is set to fly to March 22 in Malaysia for the formal launching of the match, which his MP Promotions co-promoted with Golden Boy Promotions of retired boxer Oscar Dela Hoya.

Pacquiao will start his training in April in his own Wild Card Boxing Gym in General Santos City. It will then be transferred to Manila from May 14 to June 1 then back to GenSan from June 2 until the second week of June.

ā€œI know this is going to be a tough fight. Matthysse is also a knockout artist. But Iā€™m excited to fight and be a world champion again. So, expect me to train hard for this fight,ā€ Pacquiao said.

The 39-year-old Pacquiao will be parading an impressive 59-7-2 win-loss-draw ring record, with 38 stoppage wins, while the 35-year-old Matthysse had 39-4-0 card including 36 knockout wins./PN
