MANILA – Malacañang confirmed that another government official is set to be fired next week, as announced by President Rodrigo Duterte in a meeting with businessmen on Wednesday.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo made the confirmation in a radio interview on Thursday but refused to elaborate the official to be fired by the chief executive.
“Ia-announce niya next week. Binanggit niya rin ‘yun kagabi during the meeting with some businessmen na he will be firing another official,” Panelo said in an interview with DZMM.
Duterte, during a campaign sortie of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan senatorial candidates in Koronadal City, South Cotabato last week, said that more government officials are lined up for firing.
“Hinihintay ko lang ‘yung report nila. But sabi ko na, “You give me your report and if I find it justifiable, you can stay. Pero kung may corruption, I’m sorry,” the President said.
Duterte won the presidency during the 2016 national elections on a platform of eradicating corruption in government and ending the country’s illegal drug problem.
The President has since fired several officials due to alleged corruption and in 2017, he created an anti-corruption commission with broad powers to go after his appointees and other erring government officials./PN
