MANILA – Amid rumors of ill health, President Rodrigo Duterte “remains fit and healthy” and continues to discharge his functions as head of the government, Palace said Thursday.
“President Rodrigo Duterte remains fit and healthy for his age and we thank the Filipino people for voicing their concern and wishing the Chief Executive’s strength and good health during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.
Questions on President’s health surfaced after 45 members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Fake reports also scattered online which said Duterte has been hospitalized due to mild stroke.
Further fueling the speculation was President’s non-appearance to the public since March 29 and the twice cancellation of his weekly “Talk to the Nation.”
To prove the President is well, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go on Wednesday evening, posted a photo of him with Duterte. The Chief Executive was seen busy paper works.
Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar slammed those wishing Duterte to fall ill health and dead, saying they are “foul and tasteless.”
“As we are being guided by President Duterte’s tough and efficient leadership during this pandemic, such sentiments are spiteful and detestable,” he said.
“May these individuals and groups become conscientious of their malicious actions. Sowing confusion and preying on the susceptibility of others speaks volumes of their hateful nature. We leave their comeuppance to Providence,” he added./PN
