Pan-ay shocks early favorites to win Dinagyang tribes tourney grand prize

ILOILO City – The awarding ceremony of the Dinagyang Festival 2024, held on Sunday night, brought unexpected outcomes and mixed reactions.

Contrary to expectations, the frontrunners in the tribe competition, which bagged a slew of crucial special awards, did not secure the top spots.

Tribu Silak of Iloilo City National High School in Molo district, and Tribu Ilonganon of Jalandoni Memorial National High School in Lapuz district, initially led the competition with multiple awards.

Tribu Silak won Best in Choreography, Best in Performance, and the People’s Choice Award, each with a cash prize of P10,000 and trophies, along with an additional P20,000 from Bingo Plus for choreography. Tribu Ilonganon was Best in Discipline, Best in Sadsad, and Best in Costume Design and Headdress, each accompanied by P10,000 and a trophies.

However, during the announcement of the major awards, Tribu Silak did not place, while Tribu Ilonganon was named the second runner-up.

Tribu Pan-ay from Fort San Pedro National High School in the City Proper district emerged as the champion, despite only winning the award for Best in Music category with a P10,000 cash prize and trophy.

SCORE DEDUCTIONS

Joyce Clavecillas, executive director of the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI), explained in an interview with DYOK Aksyon Radyo Iloilo that adherence to competition guidelines is essential. She clarified that no tribes were disqualified but point deductions were applied for non-compliance with guidelines, affecting the final scores.

Clavecillas did not specifically mention Tribu Silak or Ilonganon in relation to the score deductions.

Tribu Pan-ay, as the grand champion, received a P1-million cash prize and a trophy, along with a P15,000 gift certificate from Mang Inasal. Mayor Jerry P. Trenas announced a P15-Million project for the champion.

USWAG Ilonggo party-list’s Cong. James “Jojo” Ang allocated a P10 million project for the Dinagyang Tribes competition.

Tribu Paghidaet of La Paz National High School clinched the first runner-up position, receiving P500,000, a trophy, and a P10,000 gift certificate from Mang Inasal. The second runner-up, Tribu Ilonganon, received P300,000, a trophy, and a P5,000 gift certificate. Tribu Mandu-riyaw of Mandurriao National High School and Tribu Salognon from Jaro National High School were named third and fourth runners-up, respectively.

TULTUGAN WINS TOP KASADYAHAN PRIZE

Tultugan Festival from Maasin, Iloilo emerged as champion in the Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan event. Managed by Mayor Francis Amboy, the festival was awarded first place, along with a cash prize of P500,000, a trophy, and a P 15,000 gift certificate from Mang Inasal.

This year’s competition saw an additional contribution from USWAG Ilonggo party-list’s Cong. James “Jojo” Ang of P10-million worth of projects.

Tultugan Festival garnered multiple accolades, including Best in Discipline, Best in Music, Best in Choreography, and Best in Performance.

The defending champion, Tribu Jalaud, Hirinugyaw-Suguidanonay Festival from Calinog, secured the first runner-up position. It received a cash reward of P300,000, a trophy, and a P10,000 Mang Inasal gift certificate.

Kaing Festival of Leon claimed the second runner-up title, earning P200,000, a trophy, and a P5,000 gift certificate.

Several technical and special awards were also presented:

* Best in Discipline –Tultugan Festival of Maasin (P10,000 and trophy)

* Best in Street Dancing – Tribu Jalaud, Hirinugyaw-Suguidanonay Festival of Calinog (P10,000 and trophy)

* Best in Production Design – Tribu Jalaud, Hirinugyaw-Suguidanonay Festival of Calinog (P10,000 and trophy)

* Best in Music – Tultugan Festival of Maasin (P10,000 and trophy)

* Best in Costume and Headdress – Tribu Jalaud, Hirinugyaw-Suguidanonay Festival of Calinog (P10,000 and trophy)

* Best in Choreography – Tultugan Festival of Maasin (P10,000 and trophy)

* Best in Performance – Tultugan Festival of Maasin (P10,000 and trophy)

* People’s Choice Award – Katagman Festival of Oton (P10,000 and trophy)

The 2024 Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan featured a diverse lineup of participating tribes, including Katagman Festival of Oton, Saad Festival of Leganes, Pantat Festival of Zarraga, Cry of Jelicuon Festival of New Lucena, Kaing Festival of Leon, Tultugan Festival of Maasin, Jalaud, Hirinugyaw-Suguidanonay Festival of Calinog, Banaag Festival of Anilao, and Kasag Festival of Banate.

ILOMINATION

For the ILOmination Streetdance Competition, Tribu Sidlangan of La Puz district emerged as the champion, excelling in various categories such as Best in Light Design, Best in Discipline, and Best in Performance.

Tribu Sidlangan received P500,000 cash prize and trophy.

Meanwhile, the first runner up was Tribu Sagasa of La Paz district who received P300,000 cash prize and trophy and second runner up goes to Tribu Manduryaw of Mandurriao district who received P150,000 cash prize and trophy.

ILOmination Technical Awards:

* Best in Discipline – Tribu Sidlangan – P10,000 and trophy

* Best in Music – Tribu Maduryaw – P10,000 and trophy

* Best in Light Design – Tribu Sidlangan – P10,000 and trophy

* Best in Costume Design and Headdress – Tribu Sidlangan – P30,000 and trophy

* Best in Choreography – Tribu Sagasa – P1 0,000 and trophy

* Best in Performance – Sidlangan P10,000 and trophy

* People’s Choice Award – Tribu Kahirup – P10,000 and trophy

Seven spirited tribes participated in this exhilarating event, captivating the audience with their vibrant performances.

Seven tribes joined for the Ilomination Street Dance Competition; Tribu Ilonggohanon (City Proper), Tribu Kahirup of Pavia (Arevalo), Tribu Manduryaw (Mandurriao), Tribu Sagasa (La Paz), Tribu Sidlangan (La Puz), Tribu IAFA (Molo), and Tribu Buntag-tala (Jaro).

FLOAT PARADE OF LIGHTS

* 2nd runner up – International Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (P150,000 and trophy)

* 1st runner up –  Palawan Pawnshop (P200,000 and trophy)  

* Champion – Sagility BPO (P300,000 and trophy)

‘SADSAD SA CALLE REAL’

Sadsad sa Calle Real showcased the vibrant culture and energy of the tribes through streetdancing, with Tribu Molave recognized as Darling of the Crowd and receiving a cash prize of P100,000 and a trophy.

* Best in Costume – Tribu Parianon (P10,000 and a trophy)

* Best in Music – Tribu Molave (P10,000 and a trophy)

* People’ Choice Award –  Tribu Molave ( P10,000 cash prize and trophy)

The five tribes that joined this year’s Sadsad sa Calle Real were Tribu Aninipay, Tribu Ibata sa Paghiliugyon, Tribu Molave, Tribu Panaad, and Tribu Parianon./PN
