BACOLOD City – The 24th Panaad sa Negros Festivals, the “festival of festivals” in Negros Occidental, will open today amid tight security.

At least 300 police officers will be on watch at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan.

 The strict security was an offshoot of reports of terror threats in Negros Island Region after the encounter between government troops and Abu Sayyaf bandits last week in Bohol.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. called on Negrenses to be vigilant and to cooperate with security measures.

The 2017 Panaad sa Negros Festival, with the theme “Panaad: Shining Bright @ 24,” will run until the 30th.

The unique culture and products of cities and towns will be showcased at their respective pavilions at the Panaad Park.

A thanksgiving mass at 8 a.m. will start the opening day.

A lechon parade and ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Panaad Tourism, Agri-Trade Fair, Bamboo Village and Exhibits, Organic Village, Livestock and Dairy Fair, and Eco-Garden Show will follow.

Marañon will declare the official opening during rites at the Panaad Stadium at 4 p.m.

Set to grace the opening are Vice Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, Tourism undersecretary Silvino Tejada and Interior undersecretary Jesus Hinlo Jr.

Festival Executive Director Ma. Lina Sanogal will lead the raising of the Panaad Banner, while Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Victor Javellana will raise the Provincial Banner.

Twenty towns and cities will show off during the Best of Festival Dances Competition.

Participants include two-time champion Tinabuay Festival of Murcia, Sinigayan Festival of Sagay City, Bailes de Luces of La Castellana, Babaylan of Bago City, Dinagsa of Cadiz City, Manlambus of Escalante City, Himayaan of Himamaylan City, Udyakan of Kabankalan City, Minulu-an of Talisay City, Kadalag-an of Victorias City;
