ILOILO City – Farmers from Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Guimaras and Iloilo had their farmer’s field day at the Western Visayas Agricultural Integrated Research Center (WVIRC) in Jamungaya, Jaro.
Approximately 1, 700 farmers from the provinces of Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Guimaras and Iloilo participated in the event, together with farm breeders and agricultural extension workers, toured the WVIRC to inspect the station.
Farmers checked the standing crops of rice, and were taught how to use different machineries, particularly a harvesting demonstration. Additionally, the farmers were shown a certain variety of rice.
The goal of the field day was to show the farmers the actual physical appearance of “palay”, its fruit, its resistance to pests and diseases and the response of the plants to fertilizers that were given to them.
In the field, several stations were present in every area of the field. There were also research and technical personnel assigned to every station. These personnel explained different plant varieties and their maximum yields, as the farmers passed by.
According to James Earl Ogtis, PRO II, DA 6, the field day is very informative because they were able to learn many things.
After the field day, the farmers proceeded to the Leganes Multipurpose gym for the presentation of the farmers’ results, which covered different areas.
The farmers at Punta Villa also discussed seeds, farm mechanization, harvesting facilities, fertilization research and marketing last Oct. 6 to 7. It was discovered that the extension department lacked extension workers.
“Gina kulang man sa gihapon ang seed produksyon. When it comes to certified seeds and good seeds. Ang dako nga bahin sa aton nga pag produkto sang humay ang seeds nga gina gamit,” said Ogtis./PN
