Panay News journalist wins in Globe media awards

ILOILO City – Panay News reporter Ime Sornito-Sorial won in the 9th Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) for her story “Up close: Ilonggo teacher in viral ‘face-to face’ classes”.

Her win was under the Special Awards #KwentoNg Tagumpay: Uplifting Lives Through Digital Technology (Individual category).

Aside from a trophy, Sorial will also receive a cash prize.

Winners of the 9th Globe Media Excellence Awards were announced on May 6. It was streamed live via the GlobeICON on Facebook.

Also named as finalist was Panay News reporter Glenda Tayona in the News Report of the Year for her “How are the Ati in Iloilo City coping with the pandemic.”

Also another winner from Iloilo was Rhick Vladimer Albay of NCX. Albay won in the Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year category.

A total of 92 stories from media practitioners and content creators in the Visayas and Mindanao made it to the 9th GMEA roster of finalists, showing their exemplary work in telling compelling and rich stories that influence this challenging period.

This year, GMEA received over 500 entries from Visayas and Mindanao.

Of the submitted works, 49 were chosen as finalists from the Visayas and 43 from Mindanao.

Initially open to select major cities in the region, GMEA has since expanded its reach more areas with finalists coming from Tacloban, Dipolog, and Bukidnon.

“GMEA has gone through many changes in the past eight years. On our ninth year, we are proud to have received entries from more media practitioners and content creators. This shows how much the news and its delivery have also evolved. As we look forward to the 10th year milestone, we hope many more storytellers will join us in advocating for impactful storytelling,” said Yoly Crisanto, SVP Group Corporate Communications and Chief Sustainability Officer at Globe.

Finalists vied for nine awards for digital and print, two for broadcast, and three special awards.  

With the theme “#PadayonDigital: Uplifting Lives Through Digital Technology,” this year’s GMEA recognized the importance of digital platforms in delivering relevant news and content to the public.

It also celebrated the dedication of the media, considered as modern-day heroes that inspire positive change, make a difference, and carry the country to a more hopeful tomorrow./PN
