ILOILO City – The teacher’s job is not a walk in the park.
The Department of Education (DepEd) – Iloilo City Schools Division hopes that parents have realized this when they acted as teachers at home these past two years of their children’s blended and/or modular learning.
This new perspective, according to OIC city schools superintendent Dr. Novelyn Vilchez, should make parents more cooperative with the schools of their children when face-to-face classes resume a week from now.
“These past two years, students’ learning happened in home. We heard parents lamenting, ‘Diyos ko, kabudlay gali mag maestra’. The parents only have one child to teach at home pero grabe na ila complain,” said Vilchez.
Vilchez expressed hope that parents having experienced teaching would make them more collaborative with their children’s schools when new school year 2022-2023 opens on Aug. 22.
The Iloilo City Schools Division on Friday kicked off the 2022 Brigada Eskwela at Jalandoni Memorial Elementary School in Lapuz district.
With the theme, “Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik-Aral,” Vilchez emphasized the need for a collective effort to ensure a safe return of students to school.
This is not just the responsibility of DepEd, she stressed.
Brigada Eskwela is a nationwide voluntary effort that aims to address resource gaps faced by DepEd through strengthening partnerships with local communities. The program mobilizes and brings together thousands of parents, alumni, civic groups, local businesses, non-government organizations, teachers, students, and individuals who volunteer their time and skills to do classroom repairs, maintenance work, and clean-up of public elementary and secondary schools.
“We are going to fix our classrooms, gather and prepare instructional materials. We are going to make our schools conducive to teaching and learning,” Vilchez added./PN
