MANILA – Presidential son and Davao City representative Paolo Duterte is considering to join the race for the highest seat at the House of Representatives.
Paolo previously said he has no interest in the House speakership but changed his mind after talks of term sharing and being “obsessively pushed” by Taguig City representative Alan Peter Cayetano.
“The house is divided, I might be able to help unite it. Pareho lang kaming binoto ng mga tao ah. Kung term sharing, term sharing na kaming lahat,” Paolo said.
“I will ask the Visayas bloc to elect their speaker for their term share, and so with the Mindanao bloc and the party-list coalition,” he added. “We are not talking about two persons here. We are talking about our beloved country.”
“It is not about speakership alone, but who is the right person to unite Congress and I hope those running for the speakership stop influencing the Cabinet,” Paolo said.
Cayetano claimed there was an agreement between him and Marinduque representative Lord Allan Velasco to share the speakership position in the 18th Congress.
Velasco denied such agreement, saying that a term scheme is also not the will of the majority of congressmen even if President Rodrigo Duterte is fine with it.
The President earlier discouraged Paolo from joining the House speakership, threatening to resign from presidency if Paolo chose to seek the House top post./PN
