ILOILO – The 12-hectare P308-million Integrated Waste Management Facility in Barangay Aglalana, Passi City is nearing completion.

Mayor Stephen Palmares said it is now 65 to 70 percent complete, adding the target date to open the first cells of the landfill is on March 15.

This means that 27 towns in Iloilo province – Badiangan, Bingawan, Cabatuan, Calinog, Janiuay, Lambunao, Maasin, Mina, and Pototan from the third district of Iloilo; Anilao, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Dingle, Dueñas, Dumangas, and San Enrique from the fourth district; and Ajuy, Balasan, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Estancia, Lemery, San Dioso, San Rafael; and Sara in the fifth district can already utilize the landfill for the disposal of their residual wastes.

The sanitary landfill’s construction and operation was handled by private firm Basic Environmental Systems & Technologies, Inc. (BEST) under the IPM Group of Companies which inked a seven-year public-private partnership with the city government of Passi.

Palmares said the private partner is also briefing the 27 towns of the technical aspects in its utilization.

The sanitary landfill, which can accommodate 1, 200 tons of garbage a day, can also accept residual wastes from neighboring Dumarao town in Capiz province.

A P6, 500 tipping fee will be collected per ton of wastes from the local government units.

Once operational, Passi City will have an 18 percent share in the net income as well as in the tipping fee.

Presently, Passi City maintains a residual containment area in Barangay Agtabo for waste segregation./PN
