MANILA – Patrick Wilson Yu delivered timely baskets in the overtime period as National University Bulldogs defeated De La Salle University Green Archers, 80-77, in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
With the score tied at 69-all, the graduating forward delivered five unanswered points as the Bulldogs established a 74-69 advantage with less than two minutes left in the overtime.
Jake Figueroa and Kean Baclaan then scored free throws while Bacolodnon Donn Lim converted a lay-up for a 79-74 NU lead. Evan Nelle was able to cut the deficit to 77-79, but time was not on the Green Archers side.
Yu finished the game with 12 points, with five coming in the overtime period, to go with one rebound and one assist as the Bulldogs moved up to second place in the standings with a 4-1 win-loss slate.
Figueroa led the Bulldogs with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals, Jolo Manansala scored 13 points and made four rebounds. while Senegalese center Omar John had 10 points and four rebounds.
Kevin Quiambao led the Green Archers with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Negrense Mark Nonoy scored 10 points while Nelle contributed nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. They dropped to 3-2 in the standings.
Meanwhile, Adamson University Falcons scraped past University of the East Red Warriors, 72-65, to gain a share of third spot in the standings with 3-2 win-loss slate, while the Red Warriors dropped to 2-3.
With the score tied at 63-all midway in the fourth quarter, the Falcons got five straight points from Joem Sabandal and Didat Hanapi as they established a 68-63 advantage with three minutes left.
Matthew Montebon then nailed the game’s biggest basket, a three-pointer with 38.4 seconds that gave the Falcons a 71-63 advantage before Remogat broke UE’s scoring drought with a layup with 22 seconds left.
Montebon top-scored for the Falcons with 13 points, Cedrick Manzano also had 13 points, five rebounds, two steals, and a block, while Didat Hanapi and Joem Sabandal chipped in nine and eight points, respectively./PN
