MANILA – Rookie guard Aaron Black formally joined his father, Meralco Bolts head coach Norman Black, after agreeing to a deal in time of the postponed 2020 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup.
Aaraon – former Ateneo Blue Eagles cager – said that he will forever cherish the moment to be able to team up with his father Norman and his stepbrother Chris Tan, who is one of the assistant coaches for the Bolts.
“I’m gonna talk about this all my life that my dad drafted me in the PBA. I’m excited to play for Meralco. I guess God has HIS way of making things happen,” the 23-year-old Aaron said.
He added: “I’m excited to play for my dad. I haven’t done it before. It’s a new experience, but he’s basically been coaching me all my life. I’m very happy.”
The six-foot-one Aaron won two championships with the Blue Eagles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.
The deal made the Blacks the third father and son tandem to be under one franchise in the PBA. Former PBA Most Valuable Player awardee and coach Renato Agustin handled his rookie son Marc during the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup, while PBA legend Robert Jaworski Sr. and his namesake Dodot won a championship for Ginebra San Miguel during the 1997 Commissioner’s Cup.
Aside from Aaron, Meralco also acquired the services of six-foot-four rookie forward Michael Cañete, who just concluded his stint with the Bacoor Strikers in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League./PN
