MANILA – TNT KaTropa star guard Terrence Romeo was penalized by the PBA Commissioner’s Office for his antics in their 118-114 overtime win against Columbian Dyip in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
In an advisory posted on the league’s website, the former Far Eastern University Tamaraws star was fined P22,600 following the incident between him and Dyip’s guard Rashawn McCarthy.
Romeo was handed a penalty worth P20,000 for head-butting McCarthy, which was upgraded from technical foul to a flagrant two foul, and P1,600 for taunting after scoring against McCarthy.
Despite the heated exchange between the two players in the crucial minutes of the match, both Romeo and McCarthy managed to patch things up right after the final buzzer.
“Siyempre close fight so hindi mo maiiwasan iyon. Pero nothing personal. Kung ano iyong nangyari sa court, stays sa court,” Romeo told the press after the game.
“Siguro nadala lang ng intense, pareho kami e. Gusto niyang manalo, gusto ko rin manalo. E nagkakiskisan ng kaunti, siyempre parehong hindi nagustuhan. So part ng game, part ng basketball,” he added.
Dyip’s import Akeem Wright, meanwhile, was also slapped with a P20,000 fine for his flagrant foul penalty 2 against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ Aljon Mariano.
Aside from the two penalized players, four referees were also suspended – Sherwin Pineda (two game days), Mardy Montoya (two game days), Rey Yante (three game days), and Rolando Dacanay (three game days)./PN
