Following the success of the Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 basketball team in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is also dipping its fingers on the fast-emerging sport through its inaugural 3×3 tournament.
PBA Board vice chairman Bobby Rosales said that 14 teams — the 12 original PBA teams, Mighty Bond and Dunkin’ Donuts — have agreed to participate in the inaugural staging of the PBA 3×3 basketball.
“All 12 (PBA) teams will participate in the 3×3 (tournament),” Rosales said. “These 14 teams will be divided into two groups of seven. There will be a total of 42 elimination games and 14 playoff games per conference.”
“Both the semifinals and finals will be a best-of-three series,” he added. “We intend to put up a pot money which we still have to determine for the winning teams.”
The games will be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in between the scheduled doubleheader among teams scheduled to play for the day.
“There will be no age restrictions,” according to Rosales, adding that each team will be comprised of four to six players. Two Fil-foreigners are allowed to suit up.
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, for his part, said that the tournament will be a stand-alone meet. It is similar to the PBA D-League as part of the PBA’s commitment to lend a hand to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), where it stands as a major stakeholder.
“Importante ito hindi lang naman sa PBA pero para sa bansa natin,” said Marcial, who added that the decision to include 3×3 basketball this season is aligned with the program of the SBP since 3×3 basketball will make its debut in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
