PCAP: Iloilo sweep foes, Negros splits games

MANILA – Iloilo Kisela Knights came back strong in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All-Filipino Conference on Wednesday evening with back-to-back wins.

The Kisela Knights kicked off their double header with a 16-5 victory over Mindoro before following it up with a 17.5-3.5 triumph over Manila to stay on top in the Southern Division with 21-2 slate.

They walloped Mindoro in blitz game, 6-1, behind victories by Cesar Mariano (Board 1), Karl Victor Ochoa (Board 2), Cherry Ann Mejia (Board 3), Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Board 4), Mark Mariano (Board 6), and Rolly Parondo Jr. (Board 7). 

Iloilo also showed dominance over Mindoro in rapid event, 10-4, with two-pointers each from Cesar Mariano, Mejia, Antonio, Mark Mariano and Parondo.

Against Manila, Iloilo dominated in blitz game, 6.5-0.5, behind wins by Fritz Bryan Porras (Board 1), Ochoa, Mejia, Cesar Mariano (Board 5), John Silvederio (Board 6) and Parondo and a draw by Antonio.

The Kisela Knights also defeated Manila in rapid event, 11-3, with two points each from Ochooa, Mejia, Antonio, Silvederio and Parondo and a draw by Mariano.

“It was a great bounce back for us after splitting our matches last Saturday,” said Kisela Knights mentor Hubert Canto. “This twin victories were huge for us before meeting the Southern Division teams anew.”

Negros Kingsmen, meanwhile, started the evening on a wrong foot after being defeated by Pasig, 12-9, before bouncing back with a 14.5-6.5 beating of Olongapo for a 15-8 slate.

Negros edged Olongapo in blitz game, 4.5-2.5, on triumphs by David Elorta (Board 1), Adrian Pacis (Board 4), Rolzon Roullo (Board 5) and Ted Montoyo (Board 7) and a draw by Edsel Montoya (Board 6).

The Kingsmen also prevailed over Olongapo in rapid event, 10-4, on victories by Elorta, Natori Diaz (Board 3), Pacis and Montoya and deadlocks by Roullo and Montoyo./PN
