MANILA – Negros Kingsmen scored a rare sweep of their two matches in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All-Filipino Conference over the weekend.
The Kingsmen jumpstarted their double header with a 13.5-7.5 beating of Rizal, followed by a 17.5-3.5 domination of Quezon to improve their standings to 14-7.
The Kingsmen edged Rizal in blitz game, 4.5-2.5, behind victories by Randy Segarra (Board 2), Adelaide Lim (Board 3), Adrian Pacis (Board 4) and Ellan Asuela (Board 5), and a draw by David Elorta (Board 1).
Negros also controlled the rapid game against Rizal, 9-5, with two pointers from Elorta, Asuela and Ted Ian Montoyo (Board 6), and splits by Segarra, Lim and Pacis.
Against Quezon, Negros also won the blitz event, 5.5-1.5, courtesy of wins by Elorta, Alfredo Dumalag (Board 4), Asuela and Montoyo and draws by Mari Turqueza (Board 2), Natori Diaz (Board 3) and Edsel Montoya (Board 7).
The Kingsmen also defeated Quezon in the rapid event, 12-2, will full two points from Elorta, Dumalag, Asuela, Montoya and Montoyo and splits from Turqueza and Diaz.
“We are glad na we won both matches. Everyone showed up on the scoreboard in our dominant wins against Rizal and Quezon,” said Kingsmen team manager Nayk Segismar.
Iloilo Kisela Knights, on the other hand, saw their winning streak snapped with a 14-7 loss to Pasig but bounced back in the second game with a 12-9 escape over Olongapo for a 19-2 record.
Both Iloilo and Olongapo settled for a 7-7 count in the rapid event but the Kisela Knights got the separation in blitz event, 5-2, courtesy of Giovanni Mejia, Karl Ochoa, Joey Antonio, John Silvederio and Rolly Parondo Jr.
