BACOLOD City – A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) training academy will boost security efforts in the southern part of Negros Occidental, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said.
“If there is a Coast Guard academy, there will be patrol boats. It would be a big help,” the governor said.
The PCG considers putting up more facilities in Negros Island as part of its maritime security strategy. Aside from the training center, it also plans establishing more stations and a substation.
Commodore Joel Garcia, PCG officer-in-charge, said they want to strengthen the Coast Guard’s presence in Negros Occidental.
“We believe Negros is a very important island because of its proximity to Mindanao,” he said.
The island is a “good place to enhance the Coast Guard system” to provide support to neighboring regions, including Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas, Garcia added.
Marañon stressed the need to make Negros Occidental peaceful, livable and ready for further development.
“We must be vigilant and prepared. We should guard every locality,” he said during an orientation on Task Force Buglas – a capitol-formed antiterrorism group – in Talisay City on Wednesday.
Maintaining the province peaceful will help the tourism industry, too, Marañon said. (PNA)
