BACOLOD City – Charges have been filed against a Barangay Villamonte resident who was caught with 10 kilos of suspected marijuana worth an estimated P500,000.
Agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Negros Island Region accosted the 54-year-old Eduardo Simons in a buy-bust operation at the South Terminal on Lopez Jaena Street.
Simons identified himself as a former university instructor. The PDEA was unable to verify this claim as of press time.
He was charged with violation of sections 5 (sale, transportation), 11 (possession) and 15 (use) of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 at the City Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday, said PDEA regional director Roselyn Borja.
The suspect was detained in the lockup cell of the Bacolod City Police Office’s Station 6.
Simons got his supply from Luzon, the PDEA said.
According to Agent Dennis Parreño, Simons told the agency most of his clients were college students.
An undercover PDEA agent bought 10 grams of the alleged prohibited substance from Simons for P500 around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday
But the agent found more bundles of suspected marijuana in Simons’ bag when they asked the suspect if he had more supply.
All in all, the substance seized from Simons weighed an estimated 10 kilos.
According to Parreño, a gram of marijuana costs P50.
Based on this value, the overall worth of the recovered substance was around P500,000.
But other PDEA agents disclosed to the press a more conservative estimate: only between P90,000 and P100,000.
