PDEA DIRECTOR GENERAL AARON AQUINO

DAVAO City – Over the remainder of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) aims to free from illegal drugs 7,000 to 8,000 barangays a year.

More than 24,000 barangays have yet to be cleared from illegal drugs, Director General Aaron Aquino told a forum on “Rehabinasyon” during the National Information Convention in this city.

As part of the government’s antidrug campaign, Rehabinasyon focuses on the rehabilitation of drug surrenderers.

“We have a timeline of four years more before the President steps down, and we need to clear 7,000 to 8,000 barangays per year,” Aquino said.

From the time Duterte took office until Feb. 8, some 5,327 barangays have been cleared of prohibited substances.

Aquino said the PDEA has also held 85,068 antidrug operations and arrested 121,087 drug personalities.

Among those arrested were 454 government workers, including elected officials, while 618 minors were rescued, said the official.

Moreover, the agency seized P19.61 billion worth of evidence from nine drug laboratories and 179 drug dens, he said.

According to Aquino, the PDEA plans to establish offices in the Philippines’ 13 key ports to stop the entry of illegal drugs in the country.

More than 80 percent of illegal drugs in the Philippines comes from abroad, he noted. (PNA)
