KALIBO, Aklan – Did a suspected rebel in Lanao del Norte really kill Dr. Dreyfuss B. Perlas? His family doubts it.
The Perlas family is not immediately inclined to believe the involvement of Agapito Tamparong in the murder of the “people’s doctor.”
Government troops shot and killed Tamparong, who resisted arrest and tried to lob a grenade at police officers, on March 4 in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte, according to reports from the Philippine Army.
The Army identified Tamparong, or Ka Ruben, of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army as a hired killer and one of the suspects in the murder of Perlas.
But Dennis Perlas, Dr. Perlas’ father and municipal councilor of Batan, Aklan, doubted the alleged rebel’s hand in the crime.
Councilor Perlas said Tamparong may have been identified as a suspect for already having a string of murder charges.
“I was informed the police were about to serve the warrant against the suspect when he ran away,” Councilor Perlas told the Philippine News Agency on Thursday.
“Police reported that they saw the suspect carrying a hand grenade, the reason why the authorities shot him,” the father added.
Dr. Perlas will be buried on Saturday, March 11 in Batan, the Perlas family announced.
The 31-year-old Dr. Perlas was a municipal health officer in Sapad, Lanao del Norte, where he also served as volunteer physician under the Department of Health’s Doctors to the Barrio program.
On the evening of March 1 in Kapatagan town, an unidentified assailant shot him on the back. (With a report from Philippine News Agency/PN)
